Do you sometimes feel like your life is in “overdrive” and you’re struggling to keep up?

Or you suddenly lose track of what you’re doing or find yourself unable to think of the right word?

How about occasionally forgetting the names of friends and family members?

Most of us have those kind of “senior moments” when we feel like we’re losing our edge. After all, life demands a lot from us, and sometimes, it’s hard to stay on top of everything important.

Many of us live stress-filled lives, and that can affect how well we sleep, think and even recall names and faces. Whether physical, emotional or mental, stress can test your ability to get through your day.

Imagine how your life would be different if there were no limits to your focus, brainpower and cognitive performance. What would you be able to accomplish that you’re not doing now? Would you feel more at ease?

Most of us want to live long, productive lives. However, longevity is nothing without quality of life. And for a high quality life, you must keep your brain robust and your brain cells strong and protected against everyday stressors.

What We Can Learn From the Earth’s Longest-Living Trees

There’s a species of tree that has existed on the planet, unchanged, for more than 200 million years.

The ginkgo tree is a resilient, living fossil. A single tree can live as long as a thousand years or more, simply because they are so hardy and can withstand just about any type of stress.

Ginkgo survived the great ice ages. When dinosaurs vanished off the face of the earth, ginkgo trees remained. Today, the ginkgo biloba tree thrives in polluted environments and remains untouched by brush fires.

What is its secret? How has it survived every imaginable type of stressful situation?

Researchers believe ginkgo’s ability to defend against stressors is a major contributor to its longevity. Its flavonoids, or plant metabolites, which are known for protecting against all types of stressors, may play a key role.

How could ginkgo biloba help you maintain a sound body and mind in spite of advancing years and a stress-filled life?

3 Ways Ginkgo Biloba Benefits Your Body and Brain*

Ginkgo was first brought to the U.S. in 1784, but it wasn’t studied for its health benefits until the 1950s. While its leaves and seeds are commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), most of the research focuses on ginkgo biloba extract, which is made from the leaves.

Ginkgo Biloba is best known for its ability to support improved thinking and cognition, social functioning, mood and the performance of everyday tasks.*

Indeed, several studies show that supplementing with ginkgo may increase mental performance and perceived well-being in healthy individuals.*

How does it accomplish this? Ginkgo acts by:

  1. Helping to protect healthy tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals.*
  2. Promoting a healthy, normal inflammatory response.*
  3. Supporting healthy circulation and blood flow to bring more oxygen and fuel to your brain, heart, eyes, ears, kidneys, liver and lungs.*

Many studies support ginkgo’s positive effects on cognition. The first large-scale clinical trial using the extract involved 262 healthy adults, 60 years and older. Over the six-week study, the participants receiving ginkgo biloba extract (as opposed to placebo) reported improved scores for recall and recollection.*

While ginkgo’s ability to support healthy blood flow to the brain is a strong contributing factor to its success at supporting cognitive function, it also contains high levels of beneficial antioxidants.*

The Effects of Flavone Glycosides on Your Brain and Nervous System

Your body produces free radicals – or highly reactive particles – during normal metabolic functions, such as converting food to energy or for detoxifying toxins.

Free radicals are normal signaling molecules, but in excess, they have the potential to damage your healthy tissues, including DNA, proteins and lipids.

The accumulation of free radical damage speeds up the aging of your cells. The oxidative damage that occurs decreases your cell membrane fluidity and reduces the levels and function of important nutrients.

These changes can impair the function of your brain as well as your circulatory and nervous systems.

Ginkgo biloba extract contains potent antioxidants, including different types of flavone glycosides and terpenoids – the same compounds believed to be responsible for the longevity of the ginkgo tree.

The flavone glycosides and terpenoids in ginkgo biloba extract not only help prevent the generation of free radicals but also scavenge the most harmful types.*

At the same time, ginkgo biloba extract is thought to increase certain protective substances in your brain that decrease with age, such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase.*

There’s even evidence that gingko may promote the healthy cellular aging process in your mitochondria – your cells’ energy powerhouses. And it’s not just limited to your brain. This effect extends to the mitochondria in your heart and liver cells, blood platelets, fibroblasts and endothelial cells.*

Caution: Some Ginkgo Supplements Can Be Deceiving

However, you can’t be too careful when selecting a ginkgo biloba supplement. An independent analysis by Consumer Lab found that six out of 10 ginkgo nutritional supplements did not pass quality assurance testing.

The supplements that failed testing contained far less ginkgo than advertised, or they showed evidence of being spiked with cheaper materials. You see, ginkgo leaves are expensive, and an extract requires a large quantity of leaves, so adulteration to cut costs continues to be a problem.

Inspectors discovered that some dishonest manufacturers add less costly buckwheat extract or other plant materials in place of ginkgo. These materials look like ginkgo and they contain a chemical that passes identification tests.

Some companies have also been caught adulterating ginkgo extracts by using 3% hydrochloric acid instead of the more costly organic solvents, such as ethanol or acetone, in the manufacturing process.

You know that we are committed to providing you with the highest quality product, which is why we’ve formulated a brain health supplement using organic Ginkgo biloba leaf extract that is extracted with ethanol and standardized to provide 30 mg of flavone glycosides.

And to ensure you receive the best possible product, we perform Botanical Identity (ID) verification testing for plant species and plant part. In addition, we test for the Flavone Glycosides to guarantee this specific compound is present and meets the label claim.

But before I introduce you to it, let me tell you about a very special plant-based ingredient that we’ve added to this unique formula that also provides extraordinary support for cognition and brain health.*

How Unwanted Proteins Can Threaten Your Brain Health

Unwanted proteins can threaten your brain health. For example, amyloid, found in the brains of about 30% of people over 70, is a protein that can accumulate and form sticky plaques. These plaques can rob your brain cells of essential nutrients, cut off essential cell-to-cell communications and lead to cell death.

Another concerning brain protein is tau. Researchers believe tau may be the catalyst for neurodegeneration, or the breakdown of brain cells.

Tau tends to follow the depositing of amyloid and contributes to a process that threatens healthy cognition. This unwanted protein breaks down to form tangles as the brain begins to shrink and neurons die.

Yet, not all proteins in your brain are potentially problematic, and, in fact, some are highly beneficial.

A great example is brain derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. It is one of the most active and important neuro-proteins in your central nervous system, brain included. BDNF is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors, along with nerve growth factor.

Some people even call BDNF the “brain growth hormone.” But most importantly, researchers are now discovering that BDNF plays an important role in supporting brain cell health.

BDNF: The Hottest New Focus for Cognitive Health

BDNF, highly concentrated in your brain’s hippocampus, plays many positive roles in your central nervous system, including:

  • Helping to maintain the health and well-being of your brain cells, or neurons.
  • Supporting the plasticity, or the ability to change itself functionally and structurally to remain robust and stable, of your brain and nervous system.
  • Promoting the growth of new neurons and synapses, or connections, in your neurological system.
  • Supporting overall cognitive function and memory formation.
  • Influencing mood, sleep and appetite (mood changes and poor sleep patterns may be associated with lower levels of BDNF in your body).

There are more than 6,300 published papers on BDNF that document the important role it plays in the development, maintenance and repair of your brain cells.

These studies show that higher levels of BDNF allow your brain to work more effectively and efficiently to support optimal cognitive functioning.

One notable study followed up on participants for up to 10 years. Researchers found that higher serum levels of BDNF provided a protective effect against cognitive concerns, especially in certain subgroups, such as women and older persons.

Unfortunately, circulating levels of BDNF decline with advancing age. Researchers don’t yet know for sure, but the decline may be related to the age-related loss in volume of brain gray matter within the hippocampus.

Supporting Healthy Levels of BDNF

For optimal cognitive health, especially as you grow older, you want to do all you can to raise BDNF levels to support the growth of new cells and stem cells in the parts of your brain responsible for cognition.

The interesting thing about stem cells is they grow where they are needed and develop into fully functional brain cells. Plus, they can migrate to areas in the brain where they are needed the most.

Studies suggest certain interventions can rapidly change circulating levels of BDNF. Here are some proven ways to increase your body’s levels of this valuable neuro-protein:

  • Exercise – The best way to increase your levels of BDNF and promote neuroplasticity is through activity. High-intensity and aerobic exercise turns on your body’s production of BDNF and helps you grow new brain cells and stem cells. And its effects are long lasting, too, continuing up to several weeks after training.
  • Intermittent Fasting – Caloric restriction and intermittent fasting – limiting your eating to a restricted time window each day – can lead to an increased production of BDNF.
  • Managing stress – Both chronic and acute stress increase your cortisol levels and decrease BDNF. One of my favorite ways to manage stress is through emotional freedom technique, or EFT.
  • Sunshine – Regular sunlight exposure is crucial for vitamin D, and now researchers believe it also influences your body’s production of BDNF. A study of 2,851 individuals found a link between levels of BDNF and the number of hours of sunlight exposure.
  • Sleep – Studies show that people who have trouble sleeping have significantly lower serum levels of BDNF. However, stress appears to play a key role, as only those subjects who suffered from both increased stress and poor sleep showed decreased BDNF levels. Sufficient amounts of high-quality sleep are important for dealing with stress and maintaining healthy levels of BDNF.

And now, researchers have found another way to raise BDNF – through the use of whole coffee fruit concentrate.*

How Coffee Fruit Extract Raises BDNF*

What we consider a coffee bean isn’t a bean at all – it’s a seed. So, when you brew up a cup of coffee from ground coffee “beans,” you’re actually using the seeds inside the coffee fruit, or berry, of the plant.

For the production of coffee, when the coffee fruit, also known as “cherries,” turn from green to a bright red, they are harvested – either by hand or machine. The outer part of the coffee fruit is removed to extract the seeds or so-called coffee beans.

Coffee fruit or cherries are highly perishable and frequently rot while still on the plant before being harvested, which can contaminate the coffee beans with mycotoxins.

Because of that, coffee producers consider the beautiful rose-colored outer part of the coffee fruit an unwanted byproduct and discard it as soon as possible after harvest. This has been going on for centuries in the coffee industry.

However, food scientists have recently discovered that the outer previously discarded portion of the coffee fruit is actually a powerhouse of nutrition.

Coffee fruit’s unique nutrients are rich in polyphenol antioxidants that stimulate your body’s production of BDNF – which can cross your blood-brain barrier to effectively nourish your brain cells.

You might be wondering... how does coffee fruit compare to brewed coffee? Does drinking a cup of coffee raise levels of BDNF in the same way?

A study of 20 healthy subjects, ages ranging from 25 to 35, compared the effects of a placebo versus freshly brewed coffee and whole coffee fruit concentrate (WCFC) on levels of BDNF.

Blood BDNF levels nearly doubled in the WCFC group after 60 minutes with sustained effects for at least two hours after treatment. This effect was not seen with the placebo group or those drinking freshly brewed caffeinated coffee.*

Just to summarize... Coffee beans and green coffee extracts (with or without caffeine) do not raise blood BDNF levels. WCFC is an extract of the whole coffee fruit, and not the inside coffee bean. And it doesn’t actually contain the neuro-protein. Rather, coffee fruit stimulates the release of BDNF from your own cells.

Introducing Antioxidant-Rich Organic NeuroFactor® Coffee Fruit Extract

The discovery of coffee fruit’s unique nutrient profile led to the development of an eco-friendly, sustainable coffee fruit harvest and production process that preserves its unique phytonutrients.

The result of these efforts is Organic NeuroFactor® Coffee Fruit Extract – an antioxidant-rich, concentrated whole coffee fruit powder. This all-natural, patented compound made from the whole fruit of the Coffea arabica coffee plant was developed for the purpose of enhancing BDNF.

Studies show that consuming small amounts of NeuroFactor significantly raises levels of BDNF – and does so quickly. In a recent clinical study, a sub-group of subjects receiving NeuroFactor saw a statistically significant 28% increase in BDNF levels when compared to the placebo group after five weeks.

Eco-Friendly Processing – Zero Wastes and Reduced Carbon Footprint

Surprisingly, the harvesting of coffee fruit is much different from the typical coffee production process. The entire fruit is preserved during the harvest, cultivation and processing. NeuroFactor® Coffee Fruit Extract is produced through a thoroughly eco-friendly process, with zero waste and a reduced carbon footprint as end goals.

The coffee fruit for our NeuroFactor® Coffee Fruit Extract is sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms in India, affirming our commitment to farmers and ethical farming practices, the improved livelihood of farm communities and the preservation of our planet.

During the harvest, the coffee fruit is selectively handpicked at family-owned plantations, right at their nutritional peak.

A quick-dry process prevents the production of mycotoxins, and preserves freshness and stability. The all-natural fruit is never roasted and is extensively tested for the presence of mycotoxins.

As part of their eco-friendly zero-waste program, the water used in processing is recycled and byproducts from production are recycled into bricks to support the community with valuable fuel for furnaces.

Because NeuroFactor is a concentrated whole coffee fruit product, the extra step to concentrate the extract intensifies the goodness of the antioxidants in the whole coffee fruit, including chlorogenic acid.
