A sophisticated attack targeted the United States Embassy in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on March 14 morning, causing some serious losses.
Missiles were reportedly used in the attack. An Iraqi security source told Al Jazeera that missiles destroyed part of the embassy’s air defense system, without giving further details.
The Associated Press also reported, citing two Iraqi security officials, missiles struck a helipad inside the embassy. The missile landed within the embassy’s boundaries in the Green Zone, the heavily fortified district in central Baghdad that houses Iraqi government institutions and foreign embassies, according to the officials.
Meanwhile, an Iraqi security official who spoke with AFP said that at least one drone was also used in the attack on the embassy.
The attack came just hours after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. carried out “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East” against “every military target” on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil exporting hub.
The attack marked a new phase in the American-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, with Trump threatening to target oil facilities next if safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is not guaranteed.
Videos posted to social networks showed smoke rising from the embassy’s compound after the attack, and while it was widely reported that a Centurion C-RAM — a counter-rocket, artillery, and mortar air defense artillery system — was hit, the footage indicate that what was destroyed was in fact a Fixed Site-Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft System Integrated Defeat System (FS-LIDS).
The system typically includes Ku-band Radio Frequency System (KuRFS) radar or AN/TPQ-50 radar for detection, an optical system for identification, the Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-sUAS) electronic warfare systems for jamming, and Coyote interceptors launchers.
The system is typically armed with Coyote Block 2, a jew-powered interceptor equipped with an active radar seeker and armed with a proximity warhead. It can engage threats at a range of more than 15 kilometers, and can even re-attack if it misses on the first pass.
The KuRFS was clearly damaged as a result of the attack in Baghdad, while another component housed in a radar dome was destroyed, according to the footage.
The available information suggests that the attack was launched from close range, possible using anti-tank guided missiles, and loitering munitions, or even small first-person view suicide drones.
The attack was very likely carried out by cells from the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), which has been launching strikes against military facilities housing U.S. forces in the country since the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran. The group is yet to claim responsibility, however.
The U.S. stepped up strikes against the IRI in recent days, and just hours before the attack on the embassy in Baghdad, a strike hit a building in the Arasat district of the capital, killing four people and wounding eight others. Iraqi media reported that senior commanders of the IRI were among the casualties.
The destruction of the U.S. embassy’s FS-LIDS was a serious loss, not just because the system costs a little over $100 million — based on a deal for Qatar approved in 2025 that covers the purchase of ten such systems for over $1 billion —, but mainly because the attack left the compound and the entire Green Zone dangerously exposed, especially to larger suicide drones.
