International activists with the Global Sumud Flotilla revealed upon their arrival in Turkiye on 21 May that they were subjected to sexual abuse and torture during their abduction in Israel.

Survivors reported prolonged beatings, starvation, and degrading strip searches, with reports of rape and sexual assault.

Arriving in Istanbul, the activists bore clear signs of torture and mistreatment with swollen hands, broken bones, and severely bruised by the violence. Footage captured upon their arrival showed detainees displaying their injuries, one removing a scarf to reveal painful wounds sustained in custody.

Activists report at least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape, with one Brazilian activist, Thiago Avila, who was among those illegally abducted in international waters, saying Israeli forces raped activists both aboard the flotilla vessels and inside the prison facility where they were held

Avila added that the abuse extends to thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, including children, as part of a broader pattern of extreme abuse and humiliation.

The activists were held in the same torture camps where Palestinian prisoners are systematically subjected to sexual assault involving dogs and other objects.

One volunteer doctor who had been aboard the flotilla described prisoners being stripped naked and photographed by their captors.

Others had their bones broken with battens and rubber bullets shot at close range, with activists saying Israeli soldiers “laughed all the time. Super sadistic.”

Dutch activist Jesse Aletta van Schaik described being violated by Israeli soldiers as “They took off my shirt. Took pictures. Mistreated us all night long,” she said.

“Handcuffs on my hands and feet. They dragged me on the ground when I couldn't walk. They hit us. Hurt all of us. The handcuffs were so tight my hands lost feeling.”

“Shame on every government that keeps trading with Israel,” Van Schaik added. “Europe is complicit. The whole world is complicit.”

Another activist described being restrained for nearly an entire day without relief, saying, “I had my hands zip-tied behind my back for so long and it was so tight I almost started vomiting.”

“They slammed my head into a table several times and degraded me as I was strip-searched. They had me in handcuffs for 19 hours to the point my skin had begun to swell around them.”

Italian lawmaker Dario Carotenuto and journalist Alessandro Mantovani described the violence that met them the moment Israeli forces seized the vessel. “They beat you up and say to you, 'Welcome to Israel',” Carotenuto said.

A German activist reported being subject to daily beatings throughout her detention, denial of food and water, and no access to basic hygiene. “Imagine how they treat the Palestinian people if this is how they treated me as a German citizen,” she said.
